FOR KEBAB SHOPS

The rush starts at eleven. The till should keep up

A kebab shop sells the same twenty things all night, and every one comes with a size, a bread, a salad and two sauces. The grill, the fryer and the counter all need the order at once, the phone keeps ringing and half the orders leave on a bike. That is a lot of choices to get right at speed — so the choices belong on the screen, not in someone’s head.

The Yumee till taking an order

Sound familiar?

The customer asked for no onion and garlic mayo. The ticket just says “large doner”.

The phone rings, the counter is three deep, and the order goes on the back of a bag.

The chips wait at the fryer while the grill is still reading the same paper ticket.

What changes

Sizes on every item, each with its own price — and each size with its own extras

Required and optional choices for bread, salad and sauces, on the till and on your ordering site

Each item prints at its own station: grill, fryer or counter

On an Android till, caller ID shows who is ringing, and one tap starts their order

Delivery fees by distance, a minimum order and free delivery over an amount you choose

Different prices for eat-in, takeaway and delivery, from one menu

One service, start to finish

  1. The order comes in

At the counter, on the phone with a regular’s name already on screen, or from your own ordering site.

  2. Grill and fryer get their part

Each item prints at its own station, with the size, the bread and every sauce written on it.

  3. It goes out

Collection or delivery, with the address on the ticket and the delivery fee worked out from the distance.

  4. You close after midnight

One end of day for every channel, and reports count sales after midnight towards the night they belong to.

Every order the way the customer said it

“Large doner, naan, salad but no onion, chilli sauce and garlic mayo” is five decisions in one breath. Set them up once as choices on the item: the bread, the salad, the sauces. Mark the ones that have to be picked, and an order cannot be finished without them. The ticket prints every choice, and the same choices appear on your own ordering site, so an online order arrives as complete as one taken at the counter.

Grill, fryer and counter, each with its own ticket

Choose which printer each item goes to. The doner and the mixed grill print at the grill, the chips and the wings at the fryer. Nobody reads someone else’s ticket, and nothing waits because one sheet of paper is at the wrong station.

The phone, the counter and the bike

On an Android till with caller ID, a regular’s name is on the screen before you pick up, and one tap opens their collection or delivery order with their details on it. Delivery fees come from the distance, with a minimum order you set, and the same rules apply on your own ordering site at 0% commission. Deliveroo orders land on the same screen, so there is one queue instead of three tablets.

Guides for kebab shops

Free guides based on official sources: VAT on takeaway food, opening a takeaway (including the late night refreshment licence for hot food after 11pm), commercial waste and grease, fire and gas safety, the minimum wage, right to work checks and business rates. All of them are on the guides page, and there is more on running a takeaway on the takeaways page.

Questions kebab shop owners ask

Is everything a kebab shop sells 20% VAT?

Hot takeaway food is 20%, and so is anything eaten on your premises. Most cold food to take away is 0%, but crisps, sweets and most cold drinks are 20% wherever they are eaten. Our VAT on takeaway food guide goes through HMRC’s tests with the notice’s own section numbers.

Do I need a licence to stay open after 11pm?

To sell hot food or hot drink to the public between 11pm and 5am you need a premises licence from your council that covers late night refreshment. Opening a takeaway explains it, with the exemptions.

Can I charge different prices for eat-in and takeaway?

Yes. Each item can carry a separate price for eat-in, takeaway and delivery, and your ordering site can have its own online price. VAT is a separate question from the price you choose.

What does a kebab shop need to start?

Usually a tablet till, a card machine and a receipt printer, plus a kitchen printer for each station. Book a demo and we will set it up on your own menu.
